DOCK AND HARBOURS ENGINEERING
DOCK AND HARBOURS ENGINEERING
1-1. GENERAL:
Everyone knows that water covers three-fourths of the earth's surface and
the land accounts only for the one-fourth. And still how little do we know of
this area covered with water.
The body and mass of water covering the earth surface, and here we are
not talking of landlocked water areas called lakes, is divided, for purposes
of recognition, into various "seas" and "oceans". Big water
masses are oceans, such as the Pacific Ocean or the Indian Ocean, whereas
comparatively smaller water masses are called seas, such as the Arabian Sea or
the Mediterranean.
In the design of docks and harbors, we are not directly concerned about
the happenings in the seas and their behavior. We are, however, very
much concerned with the consequences at and near the shore.
